The Democratic Party has been getting farther to the left for a long time. It used to be that Republican and Democrats agreed on certain goals, just the method to achieve those goals were different. Now...the Democratic Party doesn't have the same goals. And you can't work with people who have goals that are diametrically opposed to your goals. Generally, these things are true: Republicans believe in truly free speech, Democrats want to "limit" free speech and censor anyone who doesn't follow their groupthink. Republicans believe in the 2A, Democrats wants it that nobody has guns. Republicans believe that life starts at conception, Democrats think nothing of killing babies (before or after birth in some cases). Republicans believe that a nation has the right to protect it's citizens and limit people illegally entering their country, Democrats want open borders. Republicans stand for free enterprise, and personal responsibilities, Democrats want socialism, and victim mentality. As Democrats keep drifting further and further left, basically all sane people will become part of the conservative movement.
